Eye for detail

Mr. Macdonald,
We have just read your opinion, "Letter should not have been written". We have followed the Nanaimo Daily News for years and we find it hard to believe that printing Mr. Olsen's letter was a mistake or a one-off. By claiming that you only "made a mistake", you are trying to exempt yourself from taking any responsibility for airing the content of the letter. Mistake or not, you and your publisher are responsible for every item that is printed.
We were at the protest on Thursday March 27 at the NDN offices. You exaggerate the potential danger to yourself, your family, and your staff. We only saw one RCMP officer and he arrived when the majority of the crowd had dispersed and AFN leader, Shawn Atleo had just got there from Vancouver to speak.  You claimed that "I've been called names before, but never have I been subjected to such venomous hatred and anger…" The First Nations people of our community and across this country continue to be subjected to more hatred and anger, both overt and covert, than any non-aboriginal can comprehend.
What you missed after re-entering the building was the wonderful, spirited gathering that took place where the whole crowd was lifted up with songs, drumming, and a huge round dance. Those who spoke put forward messages of wisdom, hope, and solidarity.
It is interesting that along with the opinion piece that you wrote today there is an ad in the employment section under General Employment. The ad is looking for a managing editor for the Glacial Media Group. Here are a few excerpts from the ad listing some of the skills and duties required for applying for the job:
You should have boundless enthusiasm for the written word and an exceptional eye for detail.
Determine content in all sections, as well as designing and editing pages.
Serve as a voice in the community…
Where was your exceptional eye for detail when choosing to print the letter from Mr. Olsen?
Glacier Media Group states on its website that the local newspapers it publishes "are the primary source of information for the communities they serve." The ignorance that shines through in your refusal to accept responsibility makes it clear that you, the NDN, and Glacier Media Group are far from understanding the errors of your actions.
Mr. Macdonald, if you are a reasonable person, you will welcome the offer of cultural sensitivity training. Why not see it as an opportunity to become a part of the whole community? We did and our lives have been enriched.
