FW: Out and into the media yesterday

My dear friend,
I am pleased that this is finally public. I have my concerns with some of the recommendations, yet it is a vital piece of information to bring this issue to the forefront.

The need for a more in depth look into the current practice of the medical model, psychiatry, and pharmaceuticals is paramount in changing mental health. Health care providers and policy makers can no longer plead ignorant when it comes to the harmful affects of neuroleptics(ie: anti psychotics), the harmful effects of the DSM ( Diagnostic Statistical Manual) and the archaic BC Mental Health Act.

With mental health awareness week coming soon, I with others will bring some of these issues to a larger audience.

The federal government  of Canada has ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, March 10, 2010, with the support of all provinces and territories.
Part of this UN Convention outlines the need to abolish present mental health laws, including the BC Mental Health Act.

The questions and concerns of how VIHA ( Vancouver Island Health Authority) still entrenches the medical model in our community, the high percentage of individuals in our community under the mental health act, the lack of community based alternatives ( holistic approach)  and the increasing number of psychiatrists is alarming.

I will be in touch soon as we are gathering an alliance across Vancouver Island, the mainland, and internationally.

Bless you for all that you do, be well my friend.

Wallace
