Hi,

This inquiry has been started by some psych survivors and critical psychiatrists in the UK.  I am wondering if you would be willing to fill in the survey.  I think that the more critically minded people that do so, the better.  Could you also forward it to other psych survivors, mad-identified people and others who are anti-psychiatry or critical of psychiatry within your network, urging them to add their opinions?

Hi there, Premila here!

Are you concerned about the way many service users (particularly those from Black communities) are labelled with the diagnosis of schizophrenia and then have to suffer all the stigma and discrimination that that label carries, not to mention the often devastating side effects of the high dose anti-psychotic medication they have to take. Or do you think the diagnosis is actually useful and provides certain benefits for people?

I'm not sure if you know, but at the moment there's a big inquiry going on to consider the term schizophrenia and what it means to people (see below). And obviously to be meaningful the inquiry needs to hear directly from survivors/service users. So if you or anyone you know has a view and would like to get their voice heard and contribute to the inquiry (either by completing a questionaire or just giving your views/experiences) then please see web site http://www.schizophreniainquiry.org/get-involved. People can say as much or as little as they want, and confidentiality will be assured.

This is a chance to be directly heard...... so lets get in there and make sure survivor/service user voices are uppermost......

Thanks

Inquiry into the 'Schizophrenia' Label

You may already know that an independent Inquiry into the 'Schizophrenia' Label was launched on 16th April 2012 by a group of organisations and individuals concerned about the meaning and usefulness of 'schizophrenia' and similar labels such as 'psychosis'. This Inquiry has no financial ties to any organisation and is supported (at present) by over 140 individuals and over 30 national and international organisations.

If you have not already done so, please visit the website www.schizophreniainquiry.org. Also, you could if you wish provide evidence, write in with a testimony or register as a supporter by clicking http://www.schizophreniainquiry.org/get-involved

The evidence collected will be examined by an independent panel made up of service users, academicians and a lawyer. A report based on evidence will be forwarded to a range of organisations including NICE, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, other professional and statutory bodies, private and third sector organisations, and the Department of Health.

Please email info@schizophreniainquiry.org if you need any further information.

We look forward to your support.
